Catalytic Converter Recycling – Why Does It Matter?

1.Securing PGM supply for the future
We harvest various different platinum group metals from your spent catalytic converters. These are extremely rare and the amount of naturally mined PGMs is smaller than the amount demanded not only by the catalyst industry, but also by the various other industries that rely on PGMs. When we recover PGMs from spent catalyst, we contribute to establishing a circular economic system for these metals and lift pressure from natural mines. This comes with heavy energy use, worsening the environmental balance sheet for natural mining of PGMs. Moreover, these heavy natural mining operations disturb the local flora and fauna, endangering livelihoods of local plants and animals alike, not to mention some mining is actually illegal.
3. Lower carbon dioxide emissions
Mining operations are extremely energy intense. When miners need to move high amounts of ore, this is usually done relying on machines powered by fossil fuels. Mining of PGMs often takes place in remote locations so they need to be transported over long distances in order to be processed to new catalyst. When recycling PGMs, we can lower the amount of carbon dioxides issued as recycling operations can be conducted more locally and we need to move much less weight in order to extract PGMs from spent catalyst then from “fresh” ore.

Last but not least, it is from an economic standpoint of view much more viable to recycle PGMs out of car catalyst than to just throw them away. As the prices of PGMs are still soaring (April 2020), it becomes even more viable from an economic point of view to recover PGMs from spent catalyst.
